In a spine-chilling debut, the true-crime podcast Mayhem delves into the heart of Mataheko, unraveling the sinister narrative of Charles “Papa” Kwabena Ebo Quansah, infamously known as The Accra Strangler. The premiere episode grips listeners with a narrative that transcends the traditional boundaries of crime storytelling.

Mataheko, once a peaceful village steeped in tradition, has transformed into a bustling suburb of Accra, seamlessly blending its traditional roots with modern urban life.

Born in 1964, Quansah’s criminal history, including a prior conviction for rape, foreshadowed the mayhem that would ensue. After serving time, he turned to carpentry in Kumasi, yet his violent tendencies persisted, leading him down a sinister path that left nine innocent women strangled, raped, and mutilated.

Quansah’s heinous acts gained notoriety in 2000 when he was arrested and later convicted for the murders. His victims, often food sellers or sex workers, suffered brutal fates involving rape, strangulation, and mutilation, revealing the depths of pure evil. The case took an international turn with the FBI joining the investigation, bringing attention to this horrifying series of crimes.

The trial unfolded in 2002, exposing the ghastly details of Quansah’s reign of terror. Despite being sentenced to death by hanging, he maintained his innocence, alleging torture during police custody. Quansah’s claims of being coerced took a bizarre turn as he attributed his actions to “the spirits,” adding a spine-tingling layer to the already disturbing narrative.

As the podcast explores Mataheko’s darkest corners, it pays homage to the victims and communities forever changed by The Accra Strangler. The gripping storytelling sheds light on the complexities of the case, including the involvement of the FBI and the eerie details that unfolded during the trial.

This is just the beginning of the unsettling journey that Mayhem promises to take its listeners on.
