Ghanaian gospel musician, Empress Gifty Adorye, has recently shared the reasons behind her decision to start singing in the English language.
Unlike her popular songs, ‘Yento Nkyia’ and “Adom’ her latest body of work ‘Awieye Pa’ is predominantly in English, with Twi and her native language, Awutu interspersed on the track.
In an interview on Joy FM, Empress Gifty explained that her motivation to sing in English stems from her desire to reach a larger audience.
Through her travels and interactions with diverse people, she realized the importance of being able to explain her songs when ministering to different cultures.
“I think my travelling and the kind of people that I meet, I have learned a lot because sometimes when you go outside and you wanna minister, sometimes you need to explain your song,” Empress shared with Kwame Dadzie.

She recounted two personal experiences where she felt the need to incorporate English lines into her compositions, leading her to fuse the language into her music.
Empress Gifty has recently released a new song titled “Awieye Pa,” written by gospel musician Ewura Abena and produced by Shadrack Yawson.
Known for singing in Akan, Empress Gifty now join the likes of Joe Mettle, Diana Hamilton and other gospel industry colleague who employ the English language as a medium for sharing the word of God.
While some fans and music experts have argued that music is a universal language that can resonate worldwide regardless of the lyrics’ language, others believe that listeners connect better with music when they understand the message conveyed in the lyrics.
