Ghanaian songstress, Wendy Shay has expressed her feelings on the issue of objectifying women in the music industry calling it unfair treatment.
According to the self-acclaimed dancehall queen, it did not sit well with her that female musicians were tagged, ‘female artistes’ instead of just being called artistes like it is done for the gents.
“It is not fair. First of all, I don’t even like the fact that people go like ‘female artistes’ because you don’t see our male counterparts being labeled as ‘male artistes’. They are seen as artistes so we should be seen as such. We are artistes,” she suggested.
In an interview on Berla Mundi’s Day Show which airs every Saturday on TV3, the Ghanaian singer indicated that there are quite a number of ladies in the music industry that are working really hard adding that in some cases, they strived more than the guys and calls on Ghanaians to give them some level of credit.
“Putting that aside, I think it’s not fair because there are so many women who are really working hard; like me, Wendy Shay. We have artistes like Sister Efya working hard. It’s about time Ghanaians or this part of our world acknowledge the hard work, effort and sweat we put in,” she mentioned.
She continued, “Sometimes, we even work harder than the men because of talking about the menstrual cycle and the mood swings but still we thrive.”
Born Wendy Asiamah Addo but popularly known as Wendy Shay believes that though “this part of our world” is still aspiring to embrace women venturing into leadership positions and having a voice, she is confident that someday, we will get to that point.
“I think that in this part of our world, there is this cultural mentality that a woman is supposed to be at home. The masses are still trying to figure out how to play the woman who is a leader and has a voice in society but I know that gradually, we’ll get there,” she opined.
Wendy Shay is promoting her song, ‘Heaven’ and promises that her hit, ‘Habibi’ will be out with a video very soon. When asked when the song’s visual would be released, she said, “Very soon. I like to surprise my fans.”
