Fenerbahçe center-back Alexander Djiku has garnered praise from fans after expressing remorse for Ghana’s early exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Djiku, who scored Ghana’s first goal in the tournament and won the Man of the Match award in that game against Cape Verde took to X (Twitter) to convey his regret after the disappointing elimination of the Black Stars from the tournament.

In his tweet, Djiku wrote, “Words will certainly not be enough to erase the disillusionment.💔🙏🏾 We are disappointed and very sorry for our Ghanaian people that we have failed at this stage of the competition, but if you only knew how grateful we are to have been supported by you, our Ghanaian fans.❤️💛💚”

Despite initial frustration from Ghanaians over the Black Stars’ performance, Djiku’s apology was well-received, with many applauding his leadership skills and dedication.

Djiku’s goal against Cape Verde, though an equaliser, was not enough as Ghana suffered a late defeat. The team showed improvement in their next game against Egypt, but two surrendered leads resulted in a draw, leaving them with a must-win scenario against Mozambique.

In a dramatic turn of events, Ghana took a 2-0 lead against Mozambique, only for the Mambas to mount a comeback in the last five minutes, leveling the score and confirming the Black Stars’ exit from the tournament.

The Black Stars’ recent exit marks their departure from three consecutive major tournaments at the group stage (2021 AFCON, 2022 World Cup and 2023 AFCON), signifying a historic first-time back-to-back elimination at the group stage in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The team faced a similar fate in the 2021 AFCON, where Alexander Djiku played a significant role by scoring in the final group game against Comoros in an attempt to secure qualification. Unfortunately, Comoros secured a shocking 3-2 victory, eliminating the four-time champions.

In the aftermath of the 2021 AFCON exit, Milovan Rajevac, the coach at the time, was swiftly fired, and attention shifted to the World Cup playoff. Otto Addo, who served as an interim coach stepped down following the 2022 World Cup exit, and Chris Hughton took over as the Black Stars coach.

However, the narrative remains consistent, with the 65-year-old now facing an exit after just 11 months in charge.
