Yvonne Ayew, the wife of Black Stars captain Andre Ayew, has expressed her support for Ghana in the upcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), tipping them to secure their fifth title over host nation Ivory Coast.

Despite her Ivorian background, Yvonne is backing her husband’s country for success in the prestigious tournament.

The 34th edition of AFCON is set to commence on Saturday, January 13, in Ivory Coast, with Ghana’s first game scheduled for Sunday.

The Black Stars are placed in Group B, alongside Cape Verde, Egypt, and Mozambique, while Ivory Coast, eyeing their third title, will compete in Group A against Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea Bissau.

Yvonne Ayew conveyed her dual allegiance, expressing her desire for the Black Stars to claim the trophy while also expressing joy at the prospect of the host nation winning the top prize.

“This year, I support Andre [Ayew]. He’s in the Ghanaian team,” she shared with Canal Plus when asked about her preferred team. “But, if Ivory Coast wins, I’ll also be very, very, very happy,” she continued.

Meanwhile Ghana arrived in Ivory Coast on Wednesday and held their first training session ahead of the tournament. Their arrival was marked with excitement as they donned their colourful Kente and native sandals to showcase the Ghanaian culture.

As Chris Hughton and his charges aim to end Ghana’s AFCON title drought, the tournament promises to be an exciting journey for both players and fans alike. Essentially, the Black Stars are hoping to redeem themselves following the previous disappointment encountered in the last edition which saw them exit in the first round.
