Baffour Gyan, Asamoah’s brother, has disclosed that the main reason behind the annulment of the marriage was not the perceived paternity doubts but rather a breach of faithfulness on the part of Gifty.

In a surprising revelation following the recent divorce settlement between former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan and his ex-wife, Gifty Gyan on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, Baffour Gyan explained that the unraveling of the marriage was triggered by the shocking discovery that Gifty Gyan had been married to another man simultaneously while marrying Asamoah. This fact had not been disclosed to Asamoah, leading to what Baffour referred to as a “double marriage” with the former Black Stars captain.

“Asamoah Gyan’s wife had been married before and still went ahead to marry him without informing him. When Asamoah found out, he took the matter to court for investigation and wanted the marriage annulled if it turned out to be true that his wife was already married to another man. The ruling came today, and the court found out that indeed, Gifty had been married, and as per Ghana’s law, a woman cannot be married to two men at the same time. So the court annulled the marriage, stating that it doesn’t exist,” he revealed in an interview with Asempa FM.

Asamoah Gyan and Gifty Gyan were once in love, but their relationship deteriorated to the point of a bitter separation. Their high-profile marriage came under the spotlight when Asamoah Gyan filed for divorce in the Matrimonial Division of the High Court in Accra in 2018.

At the time, doubts surrounded the paternity of their three children, prompting Asamoah Gyan to request a DNA paternity test to ascertain the truth. After five years of legal disputes, the court’s ruling confirmed that Asamoah Gyan is indeed the biological father of all three children.

The court ordered the retired footballer to provide a monthly sum of GHc 25,000 for the welfare and upkeep of their children. Importantly, this amount does not cover school fees, medical bills, dental care fees, flight tickets, and other expenses associated with raising children.

Initial reports suggested that Gyan had lost the case, with claims that he would need to grant his ex-wife properties, including a house in the United Kingdom, a four-bedroom house in Spintex, Accra, land for a filling station, and two cars.

However, Baffour Gyan later clarified that the court’s ruling was in Asamoah Gyan’s favor, as these properties were gifts registered in Gifty’s name by Gyan during their relationship. Baffour also explained that the monthly stipend of GHC 25,000 is intended for the three children, not for the ex-wife.

Gyan, after a storied career announced his retirement in June earlier this year, hanging his boots as Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances.

He also holds the record as Africa’s top scorer at the World Cup with six goals.
