Black Stars coach Chris Hughton has delivered a stern message to his players, highlighting that every member of the squad has an equal chance of securing a spot in the starting lineup for the crucial Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Madagascar.
With 25 players invited to the national team, Hughton has conducted two training sessions, emphasising the need for fierce competition within the squad.
“There is no absolute standout first XI. Whatever the squad is, whether 23, 24, or 25, players are all pushing to want to start,” Hughton stated firmly during a press conference. He stressed that each player must give their best effort to earn a starting position for the crucial game.
Hughton further underlined the importance of providing his players with comprehensive information about the opposition. He acknowledged the need for thorough preparation and cautioned against complacency, stating, “When we do our homework and when we watch our opponent, there isn’t one that we think we are going to win this game easily.”
The four-time African are top of their qualifying group after going unbeaten in four games. They need a positive result against Madagascar to qualify for next year’s tournament in Ivory Coast.
Black Stars will leave Ghana on Friday for Antananarivo where they will wrap up their preparations for Sunday’s game at Mahamasina Municipal Stadium.
