Ghanaians are sending heartfelt wishes to former Ghana captain John Mensah as he celebrates his 41st birthday today, November 29, 2023.
Mensah, a dedicated stalwart of the Black Stars during his playing days, received warm wishes from fans, colleagues, and the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on the special occasion.
The GFA expressed their wishes on X honouring Mensah’s contributions to Ghanaian football.

The Rock of Gibraltar as affectionately called played a pivotal role in Ghana’s football history, being part of the squad that qualified for the World Cup in 2006 and 2010. He also represented the Black Meteors at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

In his first ever AFCON (2002) at 20-years old, Ghana went up against Nigeria, Morocco, South Africa and Burkina Faso and only conceded two goals with him in defence.

Having risen through the ranks, Mensah starred at the 2001 U-20 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Satellites reached the final. He later became an integral member of the Black Stars, taking over as substantive captain from Stephen Appiah after the 2010 World Cup.

Mensah had an illustrious club career that spanned across Italy, England, France, Sweden, Slovakia, and Switzerland. Mensah briefly returned to the Ghana Premier League in 2013, joining Asante Kotoko.

Among Mensah’s individual achievements were team of the Tournament recognition in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations as well as Ghana Player of the Year in 2006.
He was also part of the Black Stars teams which finished as runners-up in the 2010 AFCON and third in the 2008 edition as well
