Tragedy struck the football community as Zimbabwean goalkeeper George Chigova passed away at the age of 32 on Wednesday morning.

The goalkeeper’s death is suspected to be related to a heart problem after he collapsed at his home.

Chigova, formerly a member of SuperSport United faced health challenges earlier this year when he was diagnosed with a heart condition in July.

The diagnosis followed a collapse during a training session with his club. Despite considering early retirement due to his health concerns, Chigova recently returned to training.

Notably, his contract with SuperSport United concluded in June 2023. The goalkeeper’s untimely demise comes as a shock to the football community, marking the end of a career that was not only marked by his skills on the pitch but also his resilience in the face of health challenges.

A statement released by the PSL club expressed deep sorrow over Chigova’s passing, describing him as a “great club man” and a “gentle giant” who was loved by both current and former players. The statement highlighted Chigova’s continued support for the team even after his official time with the club had ended.

“We convey our deepest condolences to his family and friends both in South Africa and in Zimbabwe during this difficult and very sad time. May his soul rest in peace,” the statement read.

This tragedy follows a similar incident in Albania, where former Ghana international Raphael Dwamena collapsed and died on the pitch while playing for his club FK Egnatia in their top-flight league last Saturday
