Morocco defender Nouhaila Benzina has made history by becoming the first player to wear a hijab at a World Cup.

The 25-year-old wore an Islamic headscarf during her team’s 1-0 victory over South Korea, her first appearance at the ongoing Women’s World Cup tournament.

In 2014, FIFA authorised the wearing of head coverings for religious reasons. However, it wasn’t until now that a player has used this ruling.

Morocco’s presence at the tournament is a significant milestone as they are one of eight teams making their debut at the summer’s Women’s World Cup.

Benzina, who plays club football in Morocco, has now become the first player to wear a hijab at a senior women’s international tournament, breaking barriers in the sport.

Previously, Benzina was an unused substitute during Morocco’s opening game against Germany, which resulted in a 6-0 loss for her team. Nevertheless, her appearance on the pitch against South Korea will go down in history and will undoubtedly inspire young girls and women around the world.
