Ghana striker Inaki Williams has swiftly returned to Spain to rejoin his club, Athletic Bilbao, following Ghana’s premature exit from the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Williams, who played in all three games for the Black Stars, faced criticism for a pivotal error in the second match against Egypt, contributing to a 2-2 draw.
After Ghana’s early elimination from AFCON, Williams wasted no time in flying back to his club. The 28-year-old striker has landed in Bilbao and was warmly welcomed at the airport by Athletic Club’s Sporting Director.
Williams is now expected to be in contention for the Copa del Rey quarterfinal clash against Barcelona.
Despite a challenging period with the Black Stars, having switched allegiance from Spain two years ago, Williams has only managed to score once in 16 appearances.
Ghana’s disappointing AFCON campaign included a loss against Cape Verde and lackluster performances resulting in draws against Egypt and Mozambique.
Following Ghana’s exit, coach Chris Hughton was relieved of his duties on Tuesday night, marking the fifth coaching change under the current administration of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
Athletic Bilbao fans are eager to see Williams back in action, hoping he can contribute positively to their Copa del Rey campaign, starting with the anticipated clash against Barcelona tonight.
With eight goals and three assists in 18 matches for his club, Williams is poised to continue his impressive run with the Spanish side.
