Ghanaian photographer, Prince Gyasi makes history as the first black photographer to create Pirelli Calendar

Ghanaian photographer, Prince Gyasi has been selected to create the highly anticipated Pirelli Calendar for the upcoming year.

A talented artist, with a distinctive hyper-real style, Gyesi expressed his deep honour at being chosen for this prestigious opportunity.

In a groundbreaking move, he has decided to feature his home country, Ghana, in a portion of the project.

“I’m honoured that Pirelli has given me the opportunity to express my thoughts, feelings and emotions on their canvas for the 60th calendar,” Gyasi says of the project. “Representation and culture are very important to me, therefore, for the first time in the calendar’s history, I have decided that part of the project will take place in my country, Ghana.”

The Pirelli Calendar, fondly known as “The Cal,” has garnered a global reputation for showcasing the artistic prowess of both its featured talents and the visionary photographers who bring their visions to life.

Naomi Campbell, Serena Williams, Duckie Thot, Adwoa Aboah, RuPaul, Whoopi Goldberg, and Gigi Hadid have all been featured on the famous calendar.

Established in 1964, the calendar is published by the U.K. subsidiary of the renowned Italian tire manufacturing company Pirelli.

Throughout its history, the calendar has captivated audiences with its selection of photographers and models, presenting a range of glamour photography from the 1980s to the 2010s.

As a self-taught photographer from Ghana, Gyasi has broken several glass ceilings by being entrusted with the task of curating the 2024 Pirelli Calendar.

What sets Gyasi apart goes beyond his artistic skill; it is his dedication to representation and culture that truly resonates.

At the youthful age of 27, Gyasi identifies himself as a visual artist, delving into the world of photography more extensively after acquiring an iPhone at 16.

Prior to that, he nurtured his passion for the craft through the use of disposable cameras during his childhood. This journey of self-discovery and artistic exploration has culminated in his remarkable selection for such a prestigious project.

Despite his young age, Prince Gyasi has already left an indelible mark on the world of photography.

Gyasi’s portfolio boasts collaborations with renowned brands such as Apple, Converse, and Balmain, a testament to his diverse and eclectic tastes.

Prince Gyasi Nyantakyi is the son of renowned gospel artistes, Collins Nyantakyi and fashion designer Abena Serwaa Ophelia.
